How a discount is calculated
A percentage discount is the percent off multiplied by the original price. Subtract that from the price to get what you actually pay.
Worked example. An $80 jacket at 25% off saves you $20, so you pay $60. The bigger the original price, the more a fixed percentage saves you in absolute terms.
The formula
Amount saved = price × (percent off ÷ 100). Sale price = price − amount saved.
Stacking discounts
Two discounts don’t simply add. “25% off, then an extra 10%” is not 35% off. The second cut applies to the already-reduced price. 25% off $80 is $60; another 10% off $60 is $54, an effective 32.5% off.
