How tips and splits work
A tip is a percentage of the pre-tax bill paid on top of the stated price. Splitting fairly means dividing the total — bill plus tip — by the number of diners.
Worked example. An $80 bill with a 20% tip adds $16, bringing the total to $96. Split between 4 people, each person owes $24.
The formula
Tip = bill × tipPct ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ number of people.
Common tip percentages
In the US, 15% is considered the minimum for acceptable service, 18–20% is standard, and 25%+ signals excellent service. In many other countries, tipping is smaller or optional — check local custom before calculating.
