How overtime pay is calculated
Overtime pay is your overtime hours times your base hourly rate times the overtime multiplier. Add it to your base pay for the total.
Worked example. A base of 37 hours at £20 is £740. Add 5 overtime hours at time and a half (1.5x): 5 x £20 x 1.5 = £150. Total gross pay is £890.
Common multipliers
- Time and a half (1.5x) is the most common overtime rate.
- Double time (2x) often applies to Sundays, bank holidays, or unsocial hours.
- Enter any custom multiplier your contract uses.
Tax is separate
This shows gross pay. Overtime is taxed at your normal rates, but a big month can nudge some earnings into a higher band. To see what you keep, use the take-home pay calculator.
